Chicken heat lamps help keep baby chicks warm while still growing in all their feathers. We offer a range of chick heat lamps at OzDingo, from 50W to 200W. The temperature of the bulb will depend on the size and temperature of the coop. So you can use a thermometer to check the temperature to see how warm it needs to be. You will also be able to see if your chicks are too warm or cold. You may need to lower the lamp if they are all huddled together under the bulb. If they are panting, your chicks are too warm.

When to use and stop using a heat lamp for chicks

It's important to gradually acclimate your chicks as they get older, as leaving on a heat lamp while they are fully feathered can prevent them from acclimating to their environment.

By week 3, they can have small trips outside when the weather is warm. By week 6, when they should have most of their feathers in, you can start acclimating your chickens by also turning off the heat at noon (the warmest part of the day) and letting them go outside instead when the weather is nice.

Can I use heat lamps for adult chickens?

It's most important while you are brooding chicks. Some chicken keepers also use poultry heat lamps for their adult flock in the winter, but if you keep your coop well insulated and free from drafts, your chicken should be comfortable and warm in their coop with their new coat of winter feathers.
